The journey of 2PM’s Taecyeon's acting career

2PM’s Taecyeon started his acting debut on KBS’ drama “Cinderella Sister”, which was broadcasted in 2010. The idol co-starred with actors Moon Geunyong, Cheon Jeongmyeong and Seo Woo in the drama, which is the modern adaption of the famous fairy tale Cinderella.

He starred as Han Jungwoo, a young man who fell in love with Eunjo, played by Geunyong. His first ever acting role imposed a new challenge on him, as he was require to speak in the Busan dialect, which was fairly difficult for people from Seoul, just like himself.

At the beginning, many people doubted his acting skill because he had never learned acting. Even his agency JYP Entertainment was concerned with the offer that was given to their artist.

“We were deeply concerned about Taecyeon’s new challenge on his new acting role at first, since he had never taken any proper acting lessons,” a JYP Entertainment representative said.

Director Kim Young viewed that it would not be a problem and asked Taecyeon to just be himself.
“We want Taecyeon to show his stage image directly in front of camera,” the director said.
Who would have expected that the singer would then go on to prove his doubters wrong and be nominated for the “Best New Actor” award at the 24th “KBS Drama Award”, then “Best New Actor” and “Popularity Award Actor” for TV categories at the 47th Baeksang Arts Awards.

In 2011, he played in KBS’s popular full drama “Dream High”, along with miss A’s Suzy, 2PM’s Wooyoung, IU, T-ara’s Eunjung and actor Kim Soohyun who has now become a well-known figure. In the same year, he played in FujiTV’s Japanese drama “Boku to Star no 99 Nichi“ as Taesung.

After taking a break from acting for two years, he then starred as Cha Gunwoo in tvN’s mystery romance drama “Who Are You?” in 2013. He played a skeptical detective who could only believe in things that he could see, hear and touch. Then, he eventually fell in love with his co-worker Shion, who was played by So Yihyun.

After acting in dramas for so long, he finally had the opportunity to appear on the big screen. He debuted in the film “Marriage Blue”, which was recently released on November 21. In the film, he took on the character of chef Woncheol who has a seven-year relationship with Somi, played by Lee Yeonhee, and they were planning to get married. His earnestness in getting into his character could be seen when he had to speak in Russian because Woncheol was depicted as someone who could speak Russian fluently.

“It made me nervous because people will watch me on a big screen. Since it’s my first movie, I feel that I could’ve done a much better job, but my goal is to continue to improve through my future works,” he explained.

“Speaking Russian was very challenging. I was sort of tutored by Guzal (one of the main cast). I started to get nervous three days before shooting. I listened to a Russian tape over and over,” he added.

Having worked closely with Taecyeon, the director of “Marriage Blue”, Hong Jiyoung, said that Taecyeon has bright future as an actor and good personality.

“He is such a promising actor. He confidently admitted his weaknesses and made endless efforts. Most of all, he is not like an idol star. He is very easy-going,” the director complemented.

There is no news as yet regarding Taecyeon’s next movie or drama. So, let’s just wait and see how the rapper’s acting career will unfold!
